Apple’s new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros come with a USB-C interface instead of a Lightning port.
This means that any device with a USB-C connector will work with the iPad Pro. Although there
are some limitations, the USB-C interface makes it easier to connect external monitors, cameras
and other accessories.
The USB-C connector can do a lot of things. On Apple’s laptops, all USB-C ports are Thunderbolt 3
ports (except for the 12-inch MacBook), which delivers extremely fast bandwidth and can drive
multiple displays.
The iPad Pro does not have Thunderbolt, it has a USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 port. This means it can transmit
up to 10Gbps, which allows the iPad to drive 5K displays at 60 frames per second.
Connect an external display:
The new iPad Pro can be connected directly to a USB-C display for communication via the
DisplayPort standard. The iPad supports HDR10 output, you can plug the USB-C cable into the
iPad, and the other end plugs into an external display with a USB-C port, such as the 4K LG
UltraFine display.
It’s a bit annoying that you can’t use the USB-C cable that comes with your iPad. You need a USB
cable that supports a “high bandwidth” connection. if you do not have. Apple recommends buying
a Thunderbolt 3 cable from the Apple Store to do this. You can buy this from Belkin for $10, and
even if the iPad doesn’t support Thunderbolt, the cable is backward compatible with high-bandwidth
USB-C.
The iPad can output to a 5K display, but the LG 5K UltraFine display sold by Apple is not compatible.
why? It has a USB-C connector, but it is a Thunderbolt 3 display and the iPad does not support
Thunderbolt. The 5K USB-C display is currently scarce and we don’t have any good advice.
If you are connecting to a display that does not have a USB-C port (such as HDMI), you will need an
adapter. The iPad Pro can use the adapter to output the HDMI 2.0 specification, supports 60Hz with
a maximum resolution of 4K, and can output HDR10 and Dolby Vision with compatible adapters.
Charge other devices:
The USB-C port on the iPad Pro provides up to 7.5 W of charging speed for connected devices.
If you have a USB-C to Lightning cable, you can plug in the iPhone and use the iPad to charge
your iPhone. If you have two new iPad Pros, you can charge them together using the included
USB-C to USB-C cable. One iPad will get power from another iPad at the same time.
Apple recently released a USB-C cable for Apple Watch, so you can even charge your Apple
Watch anytime, anywhere.
Get photos and videos from an external storage device:
The iPad does not support universal external storage. You cannot insert a USB-C flash drive
and view the files. This is an operating system limitation and many people expect Apple to
resolve it in future software updates, but it is not possible now.
However, you can import photos and videos from USB storage using the Photos app. If you
happen to have a bunch of photos on your USB hard drive, you can connect it to your iPad
and use the Import tab in the Photos app to absorb photos and videos.
This also applies to the camera. Many cameras come with a USB-C or mini USB port. As long
as you have the right adapter or cable, you can use your camera to connect it to the iPad
immediately to import files and see your photos on the big screen.
The SD card import is the same. Apple now offers its own USB-C to SD card reader. Enable
photo and video import by plugging it into the iPad Pro and inserting an SD card. It even
supports fast transfer using UHS-II cards. Since USB is an open standard, if Apple’s official
product price is too high, you can find a cheaper SD card USB-C adapter.
Connect keyboard and wired network:
The iPad has drivers for many basic types of USB accessories. iOS does not allow you to install
additional drivers, but it does support a large number of basic external devices.
For the keyboard, if you have a USB-A keyboard, you can use the USB-C adapter and plug it in,
and the iPad will detect it. The other thing that iPad supports is Ethernet, so if you can’t use WiFi,
your iPad can actually use a wired network. You can connect Gigabit Ethernet to your iPad Pro with
a USB-C Ethernet adapter. When the settings are detected, the iOS settings screen will magically
display the new portion of the Ethernet.
Connect speakers, microphones and other audio equipment:
The iPad doesn’t have a headphone jack, so you can plug in a wired headset or speaker with the
$9 Apple USB-C headphone jack adapter. If you have USB-C headphones, they will work directly.
HUB connected to multiple interfaces:
The USB-C bandwidth is high enough that you can drive multiple attachments at a time through
a single port. You can mix and match all of the above – photo import, display, microphone, etc.
Just need a suitable hub and there are plenty of loads to choose from on the market. The Apple
USB-C Digital AV Multi-Port Adapter itself is a hub that provides an alternate USB-A port for HDMI,
power input and alternate connections. The extra bandwidth of the USB-C can also be used to
achieve some functions that were previously impossible. You can now connect a 4K monitor and
camera at the same time, or connect a single 5K display at a 60Hz refresh rate. The 7.5-watt charge
is also brand new.
