Phone chargers generate too much e-waste: the EU wants to popularize the universal version

The European Commission has been promoting the development of universal phone chargers for the past ten years. The committee pointed out that the waste chargers produced more than 51,000 tons of electronic waste each year, and it also caused inconvenience to consumers. For a long time, iPhone and Android phone users have been very dissatisfied with the use different chargers.

Fourteen companies, including Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Nokia, have responded to this pressure from the European Union. In 2009, they voluntarily signed a memorandum to agree on the coordination of chargers for the new smartphones that went on sale in 2011. After the Memorandum of Understanding invalid in 2012, some of them signed letters of intent in 2013 and 2014.

The European Commission said the committee was dissatisfied with the status quo. In response to a question from an EU legislator on August 1, Vestag said: “In view of the fact that the progress of this voluntary action is unsatisfactory, the European Commission will launch an impact assessment study in the near future. The costs and benefits of other different options are evaluated. This research will help the European Commission determine if action is necessary and analyze the impact of various options.
