Foldable iPhone is expected to be launched in 2020

South Korea’s ETNews quoted people familiar with the matter, Samsung Electronics’ screen panel maker Samsung Display has sent samples of foldable screens to Apple, and may hope that Apple will adopt this technology on the new iPhone in 2020.

According to reports, Samsung’s foldable screen sample size is 7.2 inches, which is 0.1 inches smaller than Samsung’s first foldable mobile phone, the Galaxy Fold. The report did not provide more details, but pointed out that Samsung currently has an annual folding screen production capacity of about 2.4 million, and consider increasing the production capacity to 10 million.

From the perspective of patent applications, Apple is very interested in collapsible OLEDs. As a competitor, Samsung has launched Galaxy Fold, and Apple may face pressure to launch competitive products. However, the market expects Apple to at least not launch a foldable iPhone by 2020.

According to reports, Samsung may become a candidate supplier for Apple’s foldable screen panel, and Samsung has supplied most of its OLED panels for iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Although LG Display, which is also a Korean manufacturer, also became Apple’s OLED supply chain last year, it is unlikely to surpass Samsung in the short term.
