Historical evolution of phone charging interface

There are three main types of phone charging interfaces, Micro USB interface, Type-C interface, and Apple’s exclusive Lightning interface. Before this, the charging interface of the mobile phone continued to evolve, and finally only these three interfaces were left.

Circular interface

The earliest charging interface was round, and Nokia phones are leading the way. This interface can be plugged and unplugged at will. However, because this interface has a single function, most of them are only used for charging and cannot transfer files. Coupled with the circular design, in the long-term use process, it is prone to problems such as loose interface and poor contact, so the circular interface gradually disappears on the mobile phone.  

Long-flat-wide interface

The long-flat-wide interface is mainly used in Samsung’s Anycall series of mobile phones. It is Samsung’s exclusive interface type for its own mobile phones, and it is almost extinct.

The earliest iPhone to iPhone 4s series devices used a 30 pin Dock interface, which is also a long-flat-wide profile. This type of interface is bulky and has a low transmission speed. Compatibility is not very good.

Mini USB interface

This interface is also called mini USB, which is T-shaped, small in size and good in performance. Although many mobile phones are no longer used, some mobile hard drives, digital cameras, mobile POS machines, and PSP game consoles are still in use.

Micro USB interface

The Micro USB interface is the next-generation version of the Mini USB, a portable version of the USB 2.0 standard that is compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. It’s smaller than the Mini USB, it’s faster and has a longer life, but it can only be inserted on one side. Most mainstream flagship phones now give up using this interface, and only some cheap smartphones are still in use.

Lightning interface

Starting with the iPhone 5, Apple replaced the new Lightning interface, which is more compact, more feature-rich, and supports forward and reverse insertion. This interface supports up to 2.4A current carrying capacity and the transmission speed is standard in USB2.0. Although the standard is a bit lower, the actual performance and experience are very good. It is currently the standard interface for iPhones.

Type-C interface

After Micro USB interface, Type-C interface is another type of interface that is widely used on Android smartphones. The Type-C interface first appeared on the Nokia N1, and in 2015 it was used on the Apple MacBook. Today, the Type-C interface is already the standard interface for Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and other big brand flagship phones.

Why do major mobile phone brands use the Type-C interface? Because of the excellent performance and experience of the Type-C interface.
