LCD industry is on the decline: Apple iPhone will abandon it next year

On the morning of January 22, according to the media “Wall Street Journal” reported that Apple plans to stop using LCD liquid crystal material as a screen from next year, which means that the iPhone XR launched in 2019 will be the last iPhone to use this material. At the same time, the LCD industry is also declining.

LCD liquid crystal material used to be one of the key components of the iPhone. Since the iPhone 4 mobile phone, Apple has conducted in-depth research on the LCD, which has enabled them to create the most amazing mobile phone screen in the world, and with this point, their mobile phones have become very hot. Even after the iPhone’s screen resolution was exceeded by other phones, there are still other vendors that compare the iPhone screen as an industry standard.

However, OLED organic light-emitting diode materials have developed rapidly in recent years. This self-illuminating, bendable screen material has more advantages than LCD screens under Samsung’s training.

Apple finally accepted the OLED material last year and created the iPhone X. The chin part of this phone can be so narrow, thanks to OLED, the only way to achieve this.

From an industry perspective, as the leaders in the LCD industry are moving away from LCD screens, they are also working hard to find new sources of revenue. The Wall Street Journal report describes how Japan’s Japan Display Inc is in trouble because it relies too much on Apple’s LCD orders, and the future downturn and the iPhone XR’s lower-than-expected demand have caused serious problems for the company.

In addition to the existing OLEDs, Apple has been exploring Micro LED materials. It is a new generation display technology that has higher brightness, better luminous efficiency and lower power consumption than existing OLEDs.

In May 2017, Apple has begun the development of a new generation of display technology. In February 2018, Samsung introduced the Micro LED TV at CES 2018, however, Micro LED has not been used in mobile phones yet.
